WordPress Visual Editor Plugin – TinyMCE Advanced
The WordPress visual editor TinyMCE not only has a standard & an enhanced mode, but there is also it’s big brother TinyMCE Advanced available as a plugin from WordPress. This plugin converts what was a fairly basic html editor into the Rolls Royce of HTML editors.
If ever you have had to switch from the WordPress Visual Editor, to either Frontpage or Dreamweaver, simply because the WordPress editor did not have the functionality that you required, then read on, this article will definitely make life easier for you budding editors.
Some of you will have read the article back in January 2010, detailing the functions of each button in the visual editor – enhanced mode. Enhanced mode for those that do not know, adds a second row of buttons to the basic editor & obviously a little more functionality. But very often we find that this still does not provide the functionality that we require.

However the story does not stop there, TinyMCE, a 3rd party script used by WordPress, also has a big brother called TinyMCE Advanced, which is available as a WordPress Plugin (download here) & which after install, adds the following buttons & functions to what most people would class as a pretty basic html editor;

NOTE: Whilst the version offered for download above is version 3.2.7 & requires WordPress 2.9+ if you follow the link there are many other previous versions that are also available & which would be more appropriate for earlier versions of WordPress.
TinyMCE Advanced adds 15 Additional Plugins to TinyMCE:

5. Emotions (Smilies) - 6. Date and Time
7. IESpell - 8. Nonbreaking
9. Print - 10. Search and Replace

Some of the features added by the Tinymce advanced plugin
■ Imports all CSS classes from the main theme stylesheet and add them to a drop-down list.
■ Support for making and editing tables.
■ In-line css styles.
■ Advanced link and image dialogs that offer a lot of options.
■ Search and Replace while editing.
■ Support for XHTML specific tags and for (div based) layers.

After installing the TinyMCE Advanced Plugin, you can then choose which buttons or features you actually require in the options screen, it is a simple process of drag & drop and you can be setup & ready to go in just a few minutes. The increased functionality available from this plugin, makes this a real time saver.
