VPS Web Hosting – Affordable Hosting Solution

vps web hosting package is a much more affordable hosting solution  than opting for  a dedicated server package, yet can still offer some SEO benefit in terms of speed & reliability.

Some of you may not be aware that it is not just the speed of your site that can have a detrimental affect on your SEO & site ranking, but very often your choice of web hosting company can also be responsible for poor ranking.

Since Google’s introduction of site speed as a ranking factor, many of us will by now, have virtually come to blows with our hosting companies, as we  try every last trick in the book to squeeze the last few seconds of speed out of a heavily over burdened shared server. We discover to our dismay just how little is being offered on your typical shared hosting package, yet we know full well that for the vast majority of bloggers, paying out $200 to $400 per month for a dedicated server is simply out of the question. Read our guide on how to choose the best blog host!

Luckily we have another choice in the form of VPS Web Hosting, vps = “virtual private server” & as the name implies, it is not a dedicated server, but aims to imitate by offering some of the benefits of a dedicated server at a fraction of the cost of a dedicated hosting package.

What’s The Difference Between Shared/VPS/Dedicated Hosting?

A. Shared – Shared resources: Memory (RAM), Disk Space (storage), CPU (processing power)

B. VPS – Dedicated RAM & Disk Space, Shared CPU

C. Dedicated – Your machine and only your machine, therefore you have full access to all resources.

What does VPS have/offer that shared hosting doesn’t

A. Server level customization. An example of server level customization could be having the ability to enable full site wide compression, which can have a dramatic effect on you site load times & would also help improve your SEO efforts & ultimately your SERPs.

B. Burstable memory – reserve resources become available when needed, yet are idle or in use by another when not needed. Good for unexpected traffic spikes such as the Digg or Stumble effect.

C. Scalability – You can start small (1 site, no databases, etc) and grow (many sites, large Dbs, e-commerce, etc) without having to change machines/upgrading because your site has outgrown your account.

What kind of Site Would Benefit From a VPS?

VPS Web Hosting – Affordable Hosting Solution

A. VPS Hosting usually starts around $50.00 per month, yet this is still probably too high an expense for a new blog / website. However for any established blog that may be in it’s 2nd or 3rd year & with monthly traffic in excess of 10,000, VPS web hosting is the ideal solution & can only serve to enhance an already strong & established site.

B. An e-commerce site with multiple, large databases (i.e. product catalogs, etc); high traffic; multiple sites; sites with dynamic content; growing site; etc…but not enough of above for a dedicated server.

VPS Web Hosting  is the perfect middle ground between a shared platform and a dedicated server, with the only restriction to new blogs / websites, being the cost! Having said that, the added SEO benefits of increased speed & reliability,  may well be enough to justify such costs to many webmasters. VPS Hosting solutions are an excellent alternative when compared to low-spec dedicated servers and perfect for those of us who need a little more than the average shared hosting plan can offer. VPS Hosting allows for an affordable solution for small businesses that need special features such as SSH access, custom firewalls, dedicated IP addresses or other features usually reserved for dedicated servers.

  1. Yes Bill,

I must admit that I am tempted myself, although having heard varous comments about the VPS starter plans having less actually resources than your typical shared hosting, it has left me with a few doubts, especially as my current host is very good anyway, even though it is a shared hosting plan!

  2. I’ve been on a VPS for about a year now and I love it! You are right, there was no way that I could have spent $200+ per month on hosting. Choosing a VPS was the perfect choice for me.
