Section Targeting Boosts Adsense Earnings

Section Targeting Boosts Adsense Earnings by focusing the Google Bot’s attention on important keywords & phrases, this can also help to weed out off topic ads.

Now I’ll bet there is not a single reader that has not at some point, sat staring at their computer screen in pure disbelief ! Wondering how on earth Google places some of their weird and wonderful adverts on our sites..?

I have lost count of the number of adverts I have had to filter, simply because they bear no relation to my site what so ever. Some of the more obscure ones included “surrogate motherhood”, “crankshaft grinding” & “artificial turf” ! Now if you can find the connection between those 3 & this site, then your a better man than I hahaha.

Why does this happen..?

Well put quite simply an innocent remark such as “pounding away at the keyboard” is enough to throw up adverts for such things as “crankshaft grinding” simply because both could be engineering terms. The term “Design & Layout” can quite easily invoke adverts from painters, decorators & interior designers! Where as if I had used the term “web design & layout” this is far less likely to occur.

So the problem is really brought about not just by Google’s Adsense Bot miss reading what we type, but also by our own habit of abbreviating what we type & assuming that everyone including Googles Adsense Bot / Spider is on the same wave length.

Now it should be quite obvious that if someone visits your site, they are interested in whatever your website theme (niche) is..? Therefore adverts for these obscure terms are extremely unlikely to attract any interest & because of this we end up wasting valuable advertising space & our Adsense revenue suffers accordingly.

How To Get More From Adsense

In order to rectify this problem we have two options;

1. Pay close attention to your choice of keywords & phrases, could they have double meanings..? Are they placed correctly on the page, in order to get the best possible weighting factor from Google..? Don’t assume everyone (including the spiders & bots), knows what your talking about! If you need to add a couple more words in order to clarify a point then do so.

2. We can use a little help from Google in the form of ” Section Targeting “, which to those that do not know, is a small snippet of html code used to highlight a particular word, sentence, paragraph etc. The use of this code helps to focus the attention of the Google Bot on whatever it is we have targeted & if used correctly, will help to serve much more relevant adverts to your pages. This ensures your adverts will then stand a much better chance of attracting some attention.

How To Use Section Targeting

The actual html code for ad section targeting is basically an additional html comment tag & whilst it would be nothing more than a comment tag to other web crawlers / bots, to Googles Adsense Bots it emphasizes the text you have placed between the start tag <!–google_ad_section_start–> & the end tag <!–google_ad_section_end–>.

Example:1

<!–google_ad_section_start–>
<h3>Get The Best Out Of Google Adsense Using Section Targeting</h3><!–google_ad_section_end–>

This is obviously the heading at the top of the page, but now has the section targeting added.

Example:2

<p style=”text-align: justify;”>So the problem is really brought about not just by Google’s Adsense Bot miss reading what we type, but also by our own habit of abbreviating what we type &amp; assuming that everyone including Google’s Adsense Bot / Spider is on the same wave length.</p>

</p>

In this 2nd example I have coloured the start tag blue & the end tag red, the words I wished to target & focus on have been made bold, so you should now be able to follow the example much better.

Based on these examples, I have now used section targeting to focus on the following;

website, theme, niche, valuable, advertising, space, Adsense, revenue, keywords, phrases, weighting, factor, Google.

This helps give the web crawlers a much better picture of what the site/page is about & in so doing helps ensure that the ads served to my website become far more relevant. Many webmasters have reported a considerable increase in click through rate after implementing Google’s Section Targeting, although it can take several weeks before you notice any actual change.

  1. Hi Mark,

    It can take a while to show through & depends really on how often Google crawls your site.
    I would also suggest reading: http://www.my-blog-review.com/google-adsense-setup-optimization-tips/
    And if still no joy, then your final option is to block the adverts you don’t want displayed. You can do this from within your Google Adsense Admin Panel.

  2. Hi I have tried this year with an x factor article but for some reason i am getting adverts about loans, what am i doing wrong http://www.in2town.co.uk/News-Celebrity-News/X-Factor-Scandal-could-be-the-last-Straw

  3. Thanks for this helpful tip! I’m currently applying it to my blogging methods… I first learned of it in John Chow’s book, but this is a helpful refresher!
