Optimizing Keywords & Phrases For Higher Ranking will with out doubt give your site a much better chance to gain some decent ranking & also boost site traffic, but whilst keyword optimization may seem like a walk in the park for some of us, there are others that feel we may as well be speaking Chinese for all the sense it makes to them!
I remember well when I started out in this game, my ideas on keywords were simply to try and pick the most popular word used for a given search, I gave no thought at all to optimization & you will not be too surprised to hear that my pages ranked somewhere in the millions, give or take a few hundred thousand! If you think about it, using the most common search term should bring you traffic, apart that is, from one minor detail that many, including myself, often overlooked & that is COMPETITION!
Public Enemy No.1
Once you understand that “competition” for any given keyword, is your number 1 enemy, when it comes to getting your pages any sort of reasonable ranking, then the term “Keyword Optimization” takes on a whole new meaning, suddenly everything falls into place & starts to make perfect sense.
What you can achieve with a little thought & planning !
Keyword Optimization is therefore the process of choosing a relevant keyword that has a considerably lower amount of competition, yet still offers a reasonable search volume per month.
Examples:
1. “WordPress Themes” may have 90% competition yet an estimated 250,000 searches per month.
2. “WP Themes” may have 60% competition yet an estimated 45,000 searches per month.
3. “Best Free WP Themes” may have only 30% competition yet an estimated 6,500 searches per month.
Greed Can Cost You Dearly!
Now there is nothing short of a miracle that is going to help any fairly new site to rank for the 1st keyword & whilst it may well be very tempting to think that your bound to pick up at least some traffic from 250,000 searches per month, in reality a snowball in hell springs to mind!
The same is true for example 2. although for a 2 year old site, there would at least be some chance of ranking & thus picking up traffic, but this would hinge totally on how well optimized the site was, especially for that search term!
So here we are left with option 3. & a mere 6,500 searches per month, but is it not better to pick up say 100 visitors per month than choose the first keyword & pick up zero visitors..? And this leads us nicely on to the old saying “content is king”, you see although that one article may only pull in 100 visitors per month, what would happen if you had 10 such articles or even 50..? Your total traffic suddenly leaps from a very poor 100 per month, to 1,000 or possibly even 5,000 per month.
This then is the idea behind keyword optimization, it is having the ability to look at any given article on your website and by weighing up various factors, being able to choose the best keyords based on those factors, it is not rocket science, it is simply a little logical thought being applied to the process of optimizing keywords & phrases for any given situation.

It’s important to note that you don’t stuff keywords like crazy and you locate them in the right spots. Title tags, URLs, H1 tags and Image Alt tags are all really important! Be sure, as you mentioned, to vary where they go so that you mix it up and don’t over-optimize though!
