On Page Search Engine Optimization

MBR Diary Update 02 10 09

Hi, well the latest update is still looking quite good, as I mentioned in my previous update, the website has started to show some pretty good ranking in just about 3 weeks plus initial headaches with an old theme have been sorted, so now I can concentrate fully on some much needed tweaking of on page SEO ! Now you could be forgiven for thinking that now we sit back & let things take their course with regard to search engine ranking & indexing of this website.

But no! I’m afraid that this is the time where most of my tweaking & adjustment takes place, yes I know it could all be done before hand (or the biggest part of it could) , but this is just the way I like to do it.

Reasons:

1. It stops me from getting bored whilst waiting for the Google monster to form an opinion on my latest efforts.

2. Because of the time it takes to get any sort of reasonable website ranking, eg at least 3 to 6 months going on past experiences, then I see it as time saving by giving the search engines a 75% finished yet functional product to play with. Whilst I put the finishing touches as it were, you might call it polishing for want of a better term.

3. The thing to remember is once you have got the search engine bots crawling all over your nice new website or blog, then any changes you make will very often be picked up in as little as 24hrs. This then, is the ideal time for a little post submission tweaking & adjustment, because the results become evident in such a short space of time. In fact you could call this your testing or beta phase of your website promotion.

So what steps have I taken over the last 10 days…?

Keywords Research

Well looking at the last ranking check I did, I decided to do a little keyword research, as the initial words I had used were what had just sprung to mind at the time. The result of which was, of the 10 keywords I had initially chosen, 4 had very low monthly searches, 4 had very high competition & 2 were OK ! So a total of 8 keywords were changed which has totally messed up any ranking checks for a week or two at least.

On Page SEO

This included using the new keywords to replace the old ones in the text of the various pages & also inserting links to relevant pages from certain keywords (a big plus for search engines). Also had to rewrite a few meta description tags along the way, but I have a couple of very handy tools for helping with such matters !

1. Website Grader (article to follow soon)

2. Whois Domain Tools (article to follow soon)

Both of these websites I find are invaluable when tweaking your pages, although they can be a little limited in the info they provide,  when your website is younger than 3 months. Also they are of no use to anyone that is not self hosted, simply because they always check the host / main site & not any subdirectories or subdomains, which is exactly what your website is, if hosted with the likes of Blogger, WordPress or any of the other sites offering free hosting !

Finally there are two previous articles that show quite clearly the differences between optimized pages  &  un-optimized pages, please check these out as your on page SEO is particularly important.
