Keyword Density Increase

Keyword density, is the measurement of how often a particular keyword or keyphrase appears on your page.

The density, usually given as a percentage figure, is calculated by taking the total number of words on the page & then dividing this figure by the total number of any given keyword. Further calculation then converts this figure into a percentage of the total number of words on the page.

Now before any of you start thinking “Oh great I’ll just go and whack in as many keywords as I can”, that is a sure fire way to get your site / blog dropped like a proverbial hot rock! That foolish practice is referred to as keyword stuffing & our friends at Google, Bing & Yahoo have seen it all before and deeply frown upon such practices.

However it should be noted that there is a way to improve the density of your keywords, without even altering the text of your articles, although only a small increase, every little bit helps in our struggle for decent ranking.

Keyword Density Increase

Now without showing you the entire result of the keyword density analysis from SEO Book, just take a look at the image above and note the 2010, it occured 12 times & has a density of 3.29%, not only that, but also March & April also appear further down the list, each accounting for a portion of keyword density.

The problem is these terms are basically meaningless, they serve no valid purpose on the home page what so ever! Just take a look at your own home page and count how many times the date & author bio is displayed..? So the plan is we remove the code that causes all these dates & author bio to be displayed & that will have the effect of increasing the keyword density on your relevant keywords. We are only going to remove these from the home page display, as on a single post display they would not be a problem as they will only show once.

Ok now the problem is all the different themes you will all be using, my theme uses 4 seperate code sheets to build the home page, but in most cases you would only need to edit the index.php file for your theme. Before editing anything please remember to take an original copy just to be on the safe side & should you inadvertantly edit the wrong piece of code, you simply upload your original index.php file to your theme & everything will be back to normal.

The snippet of code below is what you should find in your index.php file

Editing The PHP Code

Now in order to edit the lines of code that are highlighted yellow, you can either delete them completely, or possibly a safer option for you may be to comment them out as shown below;

<!–<span><?php the time(_(‘F jS, Y’, ‘inove’)) ?></span><?php if ($options['author']) : ?><span><?php the_author_posts_link(); ?></span>–>

Save Your Edited File

Simply save your edited file as the same file name “index.php” & that my friends should now remove all the dates & author rubbish from your home page, yet if you view a single post or article, your date & author bio will be unaffected.

This is perfectly safe as far as Google, Bing & Yahoo are concerned, simply because you are not keyword stuffing in order to increase your keyword density, you are simply removing irrelevant & worthless dates. This practice increased my keyword density for all my important keywords without affecting the overall readability of any article.

  1. @ Tutorijali,

    Yes it is safe as long as your keyword density is not currently high (above 5% on any given keyword). However if you mean is it safe messing around in the code sheets, if you are not comfortable oing this, then I would advise against it for the simple reason that an error in typing a single character could mean your page being all messed up! If you are not comfortable hacking themes & plugins then it is better to play safe.

  2. If it is perfectly safe thank you for sharing!
