Social Media Prominence Can Be As Important As Good SEO !

This is one area that many of us tend to neglect & even more so since so many of the social media sites have now switched over to the dreaded No-Follow tag, I myself have withdrawn to some extent from my involvement with the many social media sites, having the thought at the back of my mind, that what is the point..? if they use the no follow tag then why bother..? Why waste time with them..?

Oh dear big mistake I’m afraid ! You see where social media is concerned there are really two issues to bear in mind & not just the issue of backlinks, which many of us tend to focus on. We seem oblivious to the fact that any of these social bookmarking sites are basically a free notice board on which you can advertise your website or blog & if done correctly you will get traffic ! Any new blog or website is always going to struggle for traffic initially and very often it is this lack off traffic that has a detrimental effect on your Alexa Ranking.

The only reason I choose Twitter as an example, is simply because in just over 3 months I managed to gain over 6,000 followers, which is a fair number of eyes to get my new blog seen by. Oh and lets not forget Google’s interest that was shown in Twitter, towards the end of 2009, this alone is enough to place Twitter at the top of my list of social bookmarking sites.

Now don’t get me wrong here, I am not saying sit at your PC all day chatting and socializing on your social network, this would just be a gross waste of valuable time. But instead of just dismissing the social media sites, simply because they no longer grant you backlinks for your bookmarked pages, instead try to think of them now as free advertising spaces. Because while your links may well be No-Follow, this only applies to search engines and any human reading  the title or description of your bookmarked pages, can quite easily follow it !

Finally when using these social media sites, pay close attention to your titles, descriptions, keywords & tags (if available). Your keywords & tags are how others will find your links / bookmarks, your title & description is what will make the difference between people clicking on your link or just passing it by.  Please bear in mind that the amount of traffic you get from social media sites is often just a couple of hundred visitors per month, but even this small amount is enough to have a positive effect on your Alexa Ranking.
